New -- Scripting Contest!
At last year's ICPC business meeting we discussed what we could do to interest more students in programming contests.I brought up the idea of scripting languages (such as Perl, PHP, Python) in programming contest. As normally happens, to reward me for bringing up this idea I was charged with the idea of putting one on and reporting how it goes. So, that is what we are going to do!
So the night before the contest we will run a 3 hour contest with a set of problems. We will only allow submissions in the supported scripting languages. Even if scripting is not your thing, this is a great opportunity to learn the environment and the submission system.
The goal of this contest is to have real competitors compete in scripting solving real problems. We will then attempt to compare problem solving rates, times to solution, problems solved, etc. between the scripting contest and the real contest the next day. While these contests are not identical (3 hours vs. 5 hours, fun vs. serious, ...). But we have to start somewhere. Here is your chance to impact the future directions of ICPC.
